PV- B_ Public Viewing Box

Following up on the interviews in the streets, Public Viewing Boxes are constructed. The PV- B´s are installed in the Mmabhato stadium for the PVA´s (Public Viewing Area) for the World Cup games and function as a telescope. Different areas of the stadium are in focus and people are asked to draw possible future scenarios for those spaces within the stadium.

The Mafikeng Manual – a user guide to a creative city – locates empty spaces in the town of Mafikeng. The project developed due to the need in Mafikeng, to set up spaces for creative ideas and industries. During three weeks of research, 21 empty spaces in the realm of the inner town were found, documented and future purposes proposed. The Mafikeng Manual is part of the Cascoland Mafikeng 2010 project, which investigated the un (der) used Mmabatho Stadium as a possible platform for artistic interventions and happenings.

Guided Tours_ Masterplanning Mmabatho

Seven un(der) used spaces within the Mmabatho Stadium are declared for new usages. A ranking of the peoples´ Dreams for Mafikeng decides on spatial transformations and the implementations of ideas. On the days of the PVA´s (Public Viewing Area) for the World Cup games Guided Tours to all seven spaces and events are organized.

A new Running Trail in Mafikeng

Guided Tour  1_ The architecture of the Mmabatho Stadium encourages the idea to implement a new running trail. The Ramps, the platforms, and the unused concrete seating areas are transformed; a short, a medium, and a long trail are designed and marked through a sign system sprayed onto the architecture of the stadium.

A new Viewing Point in Mafikeng

Guided Tour 2_ In Paris it´s the Eiffel Tour, in London the Big Ben, in Mafikeng it´s the Mmabatho Stadium that creates the backdrop for a Family Photo. On the days of the PVA´s (Public Viewing Area) for the World Cup games the audience is invited to join for a free photo shoot. The photos can be collected on 11th July at the Mmabhato Stadium.

A new Dance Studio in Mafikeng

Guided Tour 3_ An empty room within the stadium, a few local dancers already practicing, searching for opportunities. During the PVA´s (Public Viewing Area) for the World Cup games dance classes are provided in collaboration with the dancers. The classes shall be continued in the future.

A new Park in Mafikeng

Guided Tour 4_ The lack of public space in South Africa is visible also in Mafikeng. An area on the outside of the stadium is turned into a wild- life experience. Equipped with head- torches and MP3 Players, the visitor can explore the new park after dark. A lighting concept reflects existing structures of trees and bushes onto the architecture of the stadium and therefore the park is being expanded. A sound carpet with wild life vibes accompanies the visitor and plays with their imagination.

A new Food Market in Mafikeng

Guided Tour 5_ Out of 300 crates a street- restaurant is designed at an empty parking lot at the entrance of the stadium. In collaboration with local traders- Rebecca and Peter Pule- the new food market offers local delicacies to the soccer audience. The concept of the crate follows spontaneous spaces designed by street traders in Mafikeng- and elsewhere.

A new Fight Club in Mafikeng

Guided Tours 6_ At night the fighters meet in an abandoned concrete ticketbox. Local boxers are invited to show their skills and the audience is welcome to participate in some matches. Fair fights for all!

A new Club in Mafikeng

Guided Tour 7_ An empty room within the Mmabatho stadium is turned into a night club with disco- ball, local Dj´s and a bar. During and after the games the audience is invited to shake their bodies.
